Were the whispers and rumblings valid, was there a band emerging that would make a bigger splash than the Bearded Lady off the high board at the local pools? Well always only one way to find out, and thankfully the opportunity came at the Boileroom, Guildford.
First I have to say, I have seen and been to a few venues in my carny years, and The Boileroom never fails to impress. Small, compact but with a sound and expertise that always compliments any band that plays there, they deserve any and all praise they get or should get.
As it seems with the Guildford crowds, or maybe it is just I am old school in wanting to see a whole line up of bands, ok and yes some might say just ringing every cent of worth out of my £5 hehe, most do not stroll in until later in the night, so for a band first up it is not the best situation, coming out to 15 or so faces. Wake up Guildford!!
So to that THE ZONE played their set, eagerly and determined to put on a show. 4 bands on the bill meant a short set, so they set about entertaining with their usual quality. Only the third show for new drummer Jon Parry, his energetic style adding to J.C.’s striking bass, with a touch of the barracuda bass sound of The Stranglers which always goes down well with me, whilst Dave Browett’s guitar showed all his quality. They played tracks from their new EP ‘The Time We Have’, with the track ‘Just a Song’ being the one that really got the attentive crowd giving the reaction the response it deserved, as well as some older favourites, ending with The’ Zone’. Whistles and applause greeted the end of the set, deserved and received.
Next up was a band from London, LOST IN WONDERLAND.
LIW is a solo project from singer songwriter Alexis Demetriou. Forming a 4 piece band to play his songs, this band delivered their songs with an assured manner that got the increasing crowd animated. Of course it helped that many were friends but hey that exuberance is infectious so soon the crowd, 30 strong, were joining in to make the set one to watch. Their sound is obvious in its influences, Nickelback, Shinedown, Staind could all be heard in tracks like ‘ Father Time’ and ‘Wonderland’ but do not make the mistake thinking they are a copy, Alexis’s songs add and expand on any influence and the result is truly theirs, his vocals complimenting their sound and he has gathered a group of very able musicians to bring the best from his writing. Early days maybe? but a band to watch for sure.
Following into a similar sized crowd as their fans replaced the fans of the previous band, leaving to enjoy the garden and talk to their friends no doubt, DEAD FAMOUS. A young 4 piece band looked a touch nervous as they waited to begin their performance waiting for final checks, but as they broke into their first song they showed a confidence in their material that was justified. Good vocals, solid bass and drum work were backed up by some strong and at times impressive guitar work. Unfortunately not being able to find the band on sites to give more details, I can only give you the guitarist, the vocalist haha, but again a band to check out. Maybe yet to find their defining sound but there is a strong basis built for sure. Only criticism I would have, and it’s more of a personal thing maybe, was the guitar solos. No doubting the guy’s ability, but to end a couple of song with what seemed like a 40 sec solo to me left the singer standing , not really knowing what to do, like a soldier in no man’s land haha, but maybe it is my problem not theirs.
Finally it was time to see if the murmurings were right. Karn8, the 3 piece rockers from London just finishing their ‘Dirt Tour’ were up, with singer Kist brandishing a smile of such glory, only one person has ever excelled it for this word doodler. She is sneaky though, moment she hit the stage, the true rock n roller came out, taunting, abusing, in the crowds faces, yes this is what rock should really be like. Karn8 hit hard, hit fast, no evading their punches and for sure no one wanted to. Everyone was in the room, fans, previous bands, everyone had come for this, and they were not going to be disappointed. Leigh on drums takes no prisoners, I am sure I saw the snare hold up a white flag at one point, Bones on guitar is a maestro, no needless guitar solos here, every sound he crafts, powers their songs and grabs your attention. I say on guitar, as I hear bass too, where is he hiding? Technology always astounds this clown, whose musical talent ends at the iPod, so how Bones brings 2 sounds into one instrument simultaneously, is beyond me, but he does perfectly all that matters. The band generate a raw power not always instantly apparent on their great debut album ‘Of All The Strange Things’, and with the stunning and sensually strong voice of Kirst, they have the crowd enthralled, so much so that they stare and smile instead of getting down to groove to the tunes, but put a sexy lady in front of young lads what do you expect hehe. She was not having it though demanding, cajoling the crowd,’yeah I’m bitch’, watch out ladies there is a new Queen of rock n roll on the horizon. I have to wonder how long the queue to the bar was when she demanded drinks were bought for her haha.
Though a short set, the songs such as ‘Where The Fires Play’, my favourite, and ‘Wasteland’ makes this gig one of the most impressive seen in a long time. They have shared stages with such luminaries as The Kings of Leon, Youmeatsix and Attack! Attack! and I have no doubts soon they will be the notch on other upcoming bands; their claim to glory on their musical resumes ‘we supported Karn8’. With a further gig at the Boileroom June 24
th and part of Guilfest July 16th the summer is looking dirty.

So a good night’s music ending with a band everyone should make the effort to see. Effort? nope no effort only pleasure I assure you all.

What is Reputation Media?

Simple...Reputation is a web based promotion/social site with the aim and hunger to help promote all the great unsigned musicians and bands from around the world. Not only music but any talent in the world of the Arts will find a home with us.
From the moment Reputation creator Johnny Summers put the idea into a physical format the creation has grown at an amazing rate, not just as an idea but by doing what it says, promoting talent. In basically 5 months the site has received over 4 million hits, in fact running fast towards the 5 million mark, it's live radio shows are pulling in audiences of 65,000 online and growing weekly, and with the return of the Nervecast podcasts which in a former situation received 11 million downloads in a month, there is one plain fact... as we told our members 'they will be heard' and we deliver.
Having become a straight forward member when Reputation was only a couple of months old I was amazed at firstly how great and well thought out the site was for a fledgling site, I would have sworn it was at least a year old, but also the obvious care and love the guys had for Music, and what they could do to help struck me straight off. To say I was honoured to be asked if I would like to help out is the biggest understatement possible, no way I was going to say no, hehe not sure if they regret asking now that my blue face is poking into every corner, but this team cares about what they do, care about the music they promote and care about their friends the musicians.
That is the key to Reputation, friendship, 'family'. We all work together for each other, not for personal gain, all of us , the bands and all the great music lovers and fans make Reputation what it is. Everything is free, no band gets charged a fee, no team member receives payment for doing what we do, it is done for the love of music, and the love and pleasure of helping alongside new artists get heard.
Reputation will never stand still either as the new exciting partnership with LA based Inspire-U Records proves. We are very proud to be in partnership with this very innovative and Creative Recording label & looking forward to many collaborations on future projects. One of Inspire-U records founders, Kris Searle will be a key figure in the developement of our union and also a Co-Host of the Nervecast Show presenting a slot about the artists signed to his awesome label. He is a damn fine musician in his own right too so he understands what we are trying to do.
Inspire U Records is an independent record company with the same heart and vision as ourselves. They aim to provide for independent musicians and vocalists with real talent and song writing ability a platform and outlet with which to shine. Guiding them so as to inspire others with the thoughts and ideas behind and within their music.
I hasten to say haha we are a promotional Label & not a recording Label. We will work our little blue hides off, well the others are the more boringly conventional pink colour, to get musicians heard and noticed with their combined efforts but no we can not give you a record contract. Also yes Reputation Label are in partnership with Inspire-U Records but we do not have any involvement with any decision making regarding Artist sign-up with Inspire-U Records.
That is one thing that is excitingly happening now, another is our 'As Heard' download compilation album containing artists who are members of Reputation. This will be 'swamping' the music world being distributed to all major record labels, stations and Media Companies and the plan is it will be an ongoing event.
Just writing this is exciting, to be part and see it happening is incredible, proof that my initial feeling upon finding the site was spot on, these people care, no egos, no personal agendas, just true music lovers.
Well I could write for hours about this, ok I may be slightly biased now hehe, but just come into the site and you will see I am right, talk to the bands and members on board and you will know all I say is truth.
I must mention before I end this 'novella' haha, some people who without their dedication and heart this would not work as perfect as it does.
First up is the main man and creator, Johnny Summers, a 'veteran' of the music world in virtually every aspect you can think of, his vision, thoughts and work rate puts every one to shame. Yes he changes the look of the site 'hour by hour' hehe, but you know it always is an improvement never a step backwards and he has done more for bands in a few shorts months with Reputation then they have probably had in their whole careers, especially those musicians coming from areas where they have no support from society or their own countries media.
Next is lovely Mizzy, most will never know her contribution to our quest, so I hope she will forgive me saying anything,a quiet lady for sure, but her wisdom and steadying influence is invaluable, and 'smart' does not cover her thoughts.
We have the awesome Karen who's organisational skills should be leading this country, she'd get things working properly haha and with the talented poet Caz makes Reputation a place of pure friendship and fun for all.
Stan the Man, is the ideas wizard, he has been in the background lately but never anyone doubt his importance and value to the site, he inspires us all
This is the Repteam, they make all you see and hear possible. With these guys no shout out would be valid without mentioning the contribution to us from Kris Searle. I admit as much as I try, I can not mosh my swervy blues hips to his tunes hehe, but the guy is so talented and you know there is no nicer a dude out there. Listen to our shows and you will instantly see what I mean. Talking of shows, Ian from the band Soar our other co host on the radio shows is such a witty and cool man, and he is Australian, I know how can the 2 go hand in hand hehe, only teasing my friend.
I must also mention the awesome Eira from Acuvi, if there is a better, more knowledgeable writer on music I have yet to find them. If she says something is worth checking out, go look, in fact run...
These people make my experience with Reputation and music the best possible, it is an honour to help them and call them friends. It is impossible though I wish I could to list every band, and member of the site, but they too all make us what we are, as I say it is a 'family'. Thank you everyone.
I will end saying if you are reading this in a band and want to be involved, have your tunes on our shows, your gigs shouted out, your releases told to the world, just join up and come see me. It's free and works, what can be holding you back??
Stay safe everyone
